Places of Interest-Jingtong
- Jingtong Old Street
- Jingtong Village was once a prosperous mining community, and the less than 100-meter long Jingtong Old Street could have once been compared to today’s thriving business areas, such as Ximending in Taipei. Walking along the traditional street is like walking through a time tunnel. Everything you see is something from generations past, including many traditional snacks that bring back memories of olden days.
- Jingtong Station
- Jingtong station is located at the end of Ping-Shi Line, it was built in 1931, and it’s one of the precious wooden-built train stations in Taiwan. The station’s exterior and interior appearances both keep their original features. Jingtong station still keeps the original electrical railway block instruments, traditional train ticket containers and plenty of antiques. Jingtong station is definitely one of the most authentic traditional Japanese style train stations in the island of Taiwan.? At the north side of the station is located the longest coal delivery pipe in Taiwan (100 meters long, popular scenic spot for medias and photo shootings). In the year of 2001 Jingtong station was ranked by the Council of Cultural Affairs as one of the top 100 historical architectures of Taiwan and recognised as a national monument by Taipei County in the year of 2003.
- Jingtong Coalmine Museum
- Located along the railway of Jingtong Station, originally it was the dormitory of Taiwan Railways Administration, at the time total 11 staffs were allocated there. In the year of 1963, the original wooden dormitory was transformed into a brick-constructed structure. But the dormitory has been abandoned after the mining industry finished. It was chosen by the Council of Cultural Affairs as a local cultural museum and officially denominated “Jingtong Coalmine Museum” in 2002. It has a main exhibition centre, a community-development centre, a cultural products centre, a cafe and a public garden.
