For centuries, Pingxi Township is known to be a township for coals. However, did you know that before the coal mining activities, the main industries in Pingxi were productions of tea and indigo? Unfortunately, the blue dye industry is declining, but there are still some tea plantations around in Pingxi. In order to preserve the skills, Pingxi Blue Dye Workshop was established. Pingxi Blue Dye Workshop follows the ancient methods of making dye. From collecting the raw material in the mountain to the production of indigo, each process is handmade to ensure the traditions are well preserved. Currently, the workshop not only produces indigo, there is adoption of making dye extracted from natural plantations of potato betel, Pittosporum pentandrum (Blanco) Merr. Etc. Pingxi Blue Dye Workshop not only produces plant dyed sky lanterns (which won the Best Creativity Award for the Taipei County's Top Ten Souvenirs in 2008), the shop also focus on the creation of blue dye painting, so indigo dyeing is not only a skill, but also now with an artistic level to it.
