Jouwanjen Bakery was established in 1946 and it is the most famous bakery and grocery store in the region. During the heydays of the coal mines, the miner's daily wage would roughly be around $60 or $70, but the turnover of the store at that time was a few thousand dollars a day. Even back then, there were four, five apprentices employed by the shop. There were a lot of wholesalers bulk buying the Chinese cakes, one of which was the minters canteen. Bigger sales come from the sales on the train and for wedding banquets. The biggest sales come from sales of tobacco and liquor. For decades, handmade processes and skills are preserved at this shop. All the fillings were made with local black pork (Berkshire Pork) or natural beans, nuts, cane sugar and malt sugar... etc. with no added preservatives. Low in sugar means lesser health burdens. In order to ensure the freshness of the cakes, there is only limited amount baked during Saturday, Sunday and public holidays with no mass production. As there is no adding of preservatives or artificial butter, it's natural, so there is only three days before expiration day. It is a good souvenir for oneself or for friends. The bakery has been on several TV shows. Recently Sasa (hostess) introduced on “Super Taste” TV Show, we therefore recommend pre-order in case if it's sold out or you may have to wait for long time (we are not sloppy, so it would take at least 30 minutes to pre-heat the oven and bake it accordingly).
